What is Karuna Training?

A Certificate Program in Contemplative Psychology

Karuna Training is a comprehensive program in Contemplative Psychology that teaches us how to work skillfully with ourselves first, and then how to offer ourselves to others through the innate potency of the heart. The program joins deep study of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhist principles with contemplative practice, skills development, and ongoing group interaction and community support. It is a journey of discovering one's own brilliant sanity, and of learning how to exchange ourselves for others so that we can transform everyday life challenges into opportunities for openness and wisdom.

Spirit Rock, Woodacre 2019

February 6 - 7, 2019: Releasing Trauma's Grip: practicing Mindfulness and Somatics
Foundational Skills

"The mind may have forgotten but the body has not." Freud

Trauma disembodies us. Our body gets overwhelmed by stimulus or shuts down giving rise to the patterns of fight, flight and freeze. Traumatic events leave physiological and emotional scars that alter neurological structures and functions. By developing skills, individuals can recognize and reduce the painful effects of trauma and thereby free up energy for meditation and life itself.

This two day program is designed for meditators who have met with barriers in their meditative experience that inhibit their progress on the path and leaves them unsure why. This two day format willprovide foundational somatic skills to help individuals identify and release patterns of traumatic activation in meditation and in life. We will explore traumatic experiences which give rise to stuck patterns of fight, flight and freeze. Traumatic events leave physiological and emotional scars that alter neurological structures and functions. By developing skills, individuals can recognize and reduce the painful effects of trauma and thereby free up energy for meditation.

By recognizing the particular symptoms and by working directly in the body, the trauma can be healed through specifically discharging the unresolved energy of the trauma that gets bound in the nervous system in a variety of ways as body constriction, emotional reactivity, and spiritual disturbances. With the educational tools taught in this class, one's nervous system can begin to regain its capacity to self regulate.

This class is offered for meditators. This class requires people who are willing to participate in their personal unfolding through experiential exercise, sharing and inquiry.

WHERE: Dhamma Dena Desert Vipassana Centre
COST: $45/ day plus teacher dana

Winter as we know is a universal time to Retreat inward. A special time to take refuge in our body and mind, a special time to awaken deep places of safety, peace, joy and recover from the whirlwind of difficulties in this fast paced life.

In this holiday retreat - mixing deep periods of silence, with guidance, music, movement, and opportunities to create sacred ritual- we can find refuge in reconnecting to our deepest sense of embodied presence. It can serve as a time to heal, to recover from life’s busyness, stressors, and perhaps come to a new understanding of life as it is unfolds from moment to moment. Remembrances of retreating with Ruth and practicing with her exquisitely precise mindfulness guidance, the dharma always came alive. When off the cushion here, there is feeling of being held by the refuge in the beauty and openness of the desert, in the sounds of the wind, in the safety of being held by the dharma.

Find yourself in the desert this winter and celebrate with us.
